The Corporate Sports Network (CSN) has joined the football fraternity in mourning SC Villa captain David Owori, who died after being hit with a paver in a robbery incident early in the week.
Owori, a respected figure on and off the pitch, was reportedly attacked by assailants who allegedly targeted his phone, an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football community, coming at a time when he was still actively contributing to the sport he loved.
Mr Charles Ssempagala, CSN’s general manager, described Owori’s death as a painful loss not only to SC Villa but also to Uganda’s sporting community, which has lost a player who represented the values of teamwork, discipline and leadership.
“He was more than a footballer. He was a leader, a teammate and part of a sporting family that stretches beyond club rivalries,” the CSN said in a message of condolence.
Owori’s death has also renewed concerns about the growing threat of phone snatching and street robberies in Kampala, with the football community calling for stronger measures to protect citizens from criminals who target pedestrians and motorists for mobile phones and other valuables.
As Owori was laid to rest in Tororo district on Saturday, the police revealed that they had made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder after tracking his stolen iPhone 14 Pro Max, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
The suspects have been identified as Bashir Munyaneza, alias “Jemo”, a suspected dealer in stolen mobile phones, and his associate, Samuel Magoba. The two are in police custody and are assisting investigators to identify other people allegedly linked to Owori’s murder and a wider network involved in robberies in Kampala and other parts of the country.
