DTB Bank have been crowned basketball champions after surviving a dramatic final decided by a solitary point, capping a remarkable season for a side that entered the competition as underdogs but left as champions.
The bankers held their nerve when it mattered most, producing a composed display under intense pressure to claim the title and send their bosses and supporters into celebration.
For team manager Charles Kivumbi, the victory was not simply about the final score. It was a triumph of communication, discipline and belief.
“It was a very big achievement for us. Winning by a solitary point shows how tough the game was,” Kivumbi said, reflecting on a final that went down to the wire.
Kivumbi revealed that DTB approached the decisive encounter with considerable respect for their opponents, particularly because of the intimidating atmosphere created by their supporters.
“We entered as underdogs, and we feared them because their fans had the vibe,” he said.
But rather than allowing the atmosphere to overwhelm his players, Kivumbi urged them to remain calm, understand their strengths and exploit their opponents’ weaknesses.
“I told my members to be calm and use all their strengths at their disposal. Game communication was the key factor,” he said.
That message appeared to resonate on the court as DTB kept their composure during the crucial moments, eventually squeezing out the narrowest of victories.
Among the players who stood out in DTB’s championship campaign were Nickson Tumusiime and Brandon Patrick, whose performances proved decisive in the bankers’ march to the title.
The pair provided the quality, energy and composure required in a tournament where the margins between victory and defeat were razor-thin.
Their contribution, however, was part of a broader team effort that saw DTB combine youthful energy with tactical discipline.
For Kivumbi, the title has also changed the team’s outlook.
The bankers now believe they have established themselves as a force to reckon with and intend to carry that confidence into the next season.
“We proved we can win under pressure. We are the champions. Let that sink in,” Kivumbi said.
DTB’s basketball triumph is hardly an isolated success.
The bankers entered the season riding on considerable confidence after dominating the 2025 Bankers Sports Gala, where they amassed an impressive 855 points to emerge overall winners.
That success appears to have created a winning mentality across the institution, with the basketball team now adding another major achievement to DTB’s growing sporting reputation.
Their journey to the final was equally impressive.
In the semi-finals, DTB Bank defeated Roofings Group 22-20 in a closely contested encounter, booking their place in the championship decider.
In the other semi-final, Centenary Bank edged Case Hospital 18-12 on the inside courts at Jeph International University to set up the final showdown.

With the two sides separated by nly a handful of baskets in the semi-finals, the stage was set for a championship battle in which every possession would matter.
And that is precisely how the final unfolded.
Last year’s champions, Case Hospital, were unable to retain their title, finishing fourth after losing 10-7 to perennial contenders Roofings Group Limited in the third-place playoff.
The youthful Case Hospital side, which had captured the imagination of fans in the previous campaign, appeared to lack the same energy this time around.
Captain and MVP Lewis Kigongo once again attracted attention with his individual brilliance and ability to entertain the crowd, but his efforts were not enough to inspire Case to another podium finish.
Kigongo had been one of the outstanding performers during Case Hospital’s title-winning campaign, sweeping fans off their feet with his skill, confidence and commanding presence.
This time, however, the youthful side appeared fatigued as the tournament progressed, eventually missing out on a medal.
For DTB, the championship represents more than another trophy. It is a statement.
The bankers came into the competition with the pressure of expectation following their success at the Bankers Sports Gala, yet they managed to navigate the difficult moments and produce when it mattered most.
Their one-point victory also demonstrated the importance of composure in high-pressure corporate sport, where games can be decided by a single possession, a defensive stop or one well-executed attack.
Kivumbi believes the experience will make DTB even stronger.
The challenge now is to ensure that the championship does not become a one-season wonder.
With Tumusiime, Asiimwe and a youthful squad providing the foundation, DTB will enter the next campaign with something they did not have at the start of this one: the confidence and authority of defending champions. They came as underdogs. They survived the pressure.
And when the final whistle sounded, DTB Bank had done enough by the smallest possible margin. One point was all it took to turn the bankers into champions**.**
