When the Corporate Sports Network volleyball competition kicked off at the Maroons Sports Grounds in Luzira, several companies dreamt of putting up a splendid show at the June outing.
They, however, faced a litmus test. Ahead of the buildupto the games, the technical team embarked on a thorough screening exercise in a bid to weed out the professional players. This caused an unnecessary delay with some teams, ripped threadbare and failing to raise legitimate players at the 11th hour.

Despite the delays, when the umpires blew the first whistle to signal kickoff, there was end-to-end action. There were rapid exchanges of powerful hits, strategic blocks, diving saves, and athleticism exhibited by the teams.

Even after the screening, most teams were not just left with “fillers.” Players exhibited a foundational understanding of volleyball rules, and games were indeed exciting as the teams played three sets. There were few cases of violations, like failure to serve the ball over the net successfully or ball handling errors. The elimination stages, set for July 27 at the Maroons Grounds, should make for exciting viewing.
